CHT Joins Forces with Foreign Operators for Submarine Cable Construction

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) has signed a construction and maintenance agreement with China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, Korea Telecom, and US companies for the New Cross Pacific Cable (NCP), reported United Daily News on October 22. With a total construction cost of around NT$10 billion (US$3.3 billion; US$1=NT$30.405), the cable system will link Taiwan, China, Korea, Japan, and the United States, with total transfer capacity of over 80Tbps (1,000Gbps) and a transfer speed of over 10Tbps per fiber-optic pair. NPC will be completed in the second half of 2017. Besides, CHT had previously participated in the construction of SJC (Southeast Asia Japan Cable) and APG (Asia-Pacific Gateway) submarine cable systems.
